Everyone has their favourite genre of books. In our office, there are crime readers, collectors of cookbooks, every Nigella Lawson book in print, Enid Blyton classics and voracious readers of business books. For me, there’s nothing better than a glass of wine on the couch with the latest in party planning books. From the classics from Martha Stewart and Julia Childs to the modern day party divas like Amy Atlas and Kara Alan, there is a gorgeously decadent party book for every night of month! I find all sorts of wonderful planning ideas in these books – from creative kids party ideas to tablescaping and decorating themes that you simply have to try!
Here are a few of the best party planning books:
Kara Alan has taken the party planning world by storm over the past few years and her first book, Kara’s Party Ideas doesn’t disappoint. Kara provides inspiration for kids parties, adult soirees and all sorts of holiday entertaining in her typically colourful and bright style. Think fairy parties and the prettiest of princesses – you’ll find them all here.
Have you attended a wedding or birthday party over the past couple of years without a candy buffet? I bet you haven’t! The lady behind the trend is super dessert stylist, Amy Atlas. And, her book Sweet Designs is just the ticket to creating wonderfully whimsical and beautifully styled dessert tables that look so good, you may not be able to dip in! Filled with amazing photos that will have you craving a sugar fix, and plenty of step by step instructions and recipes, this is one of my go-to books for every party.
David Tutera is one of my all time favourite personalities. He’s suave and sophisticated and super-creative. As a party planner and wedding stylist, he’s one of the best in the world and his books are wow-worthy, as you would expect. Check out The Party Planner as a start, but if you want more inspired party planning ideas, David also has some other faves like America Entertains and Big Birthdays which are really inspiring too.
Having grown up with the kids of Beverly Hills 90210, I was already a Tori Spelling fan. And when she took a turn from acting into party planning and crafting, I was there every step of the way! Her foray into party planning and event styling is very crafty and handmade, which is great for many events. Celebratori is great for kids parties, fun paper crafting ideas and favour inspiration, but it isn’t extravagant or lavish. Grab it for the fun factor and to inspire many crafty Sunday afternoons.
Preston Bailey is one of the most famous wedding planners and florists in the universe and this tome, Design for Entertaining is a must have for any serious party planner. Completely lavish and over the top, his ideas are only for the rich and famous but can inspire your creativity for everyday entertaining with centrepieces, table scapes, floral design and dinner party tables.
Martha Stewart is of course, the supreme entertainer. In this amazing book, she welcomes you into her world, in Maine, Bedford and more to cocktail parties, Easter egg hunts, Halloween dinners and dinner parties galore. Endlessly inspiring, this book will become your entertaining bible – just the way Martha intended it.
